Style Classic: The Pencil Skirt

I run my virtual mouth a lot about trends, so I think it's time to focus on some classics. A timeless piece that I find myself wearing again and again is the simple, curve-hugging pencil skirt.

Like many other girls of my generation, I became aware of this piece, which is both professional and sexy, through the show Mad Men. The pencil skirt defies the idea that workwear must consist of a boxy pantsuit that hides the female form away. Granted, the late sixties was a time of rampant sexism and gender inequality in the workplace and the home. Got that. I'm not saying I have any interest in returning to that era -- but the structured, crisp way of dressing appeals to me. I also feel the need to make a very necessary disclaimer: I do not feel that women should feel that they are under any pressure to present themselves as embodying a particular aesthetic in the office. The focus should always be on achievement itself. I just think that making a conscious choice to wear somewhat body-conscious, feminine clothing in such an atmosphere today lends support to the idea that femininity can exist in the same sphere as keen intelligence and ability. I still plan on kicking ass in the office and seeing women achieve equal pay for equal work within my lifetime. I also plan on looking damn good by my own estimation while doing it.

Core Cutouts: The New Sexy

No one can deny the blatant sexual appeal of a cleavage and bust showing above the top of a low-cut dress or a tight, short dress barely skimming over a curvalicious rear. However, fashion has decided to twist this sexual standard a little with the incorporation of core cutouts. More and more designers are creating dresses and shirts that are not necessarily the sexy bodycon dresses we envision when the word sexy comes to mind. However, these articles of clothing still carry the punch required to turn heads with their teasing glimpses of skin in unexpected places. A flash of bare back here. A dash of a waist there. Current fashion is taking the idea of less is more to a new level as deceivingly normal dresses leave others wishing for more as skin is bared in small and surprising doses. It's a great way to add some spice and a little bit of naughty to your outfit even on a daily and casual basis.

Intermix: Edgy, Tomboy Chic, and Sexy

The New Year has arrived and I’ve been feeling daredevil-like. That’s right! Suddenly, I feel the urge to live my life on the edge. I wish to learn how to ride a Kawasaki. My heart’s desire is to test drive a red Ferrari and thoughts of Nascar have been racing through my mind, literally! So for 2012, I’ve come to the conclusion that I need to take more risks in life, one being, wearing more edgy, tomboy-ish, and sexy pieces! The intermixing of these three styles to form one complete look is absolutely incredible! The color black defines every aspect of edginess from my fashionable perspective. Red is sexy and seductive, but I find it to be the pop of color needed to achieve certain edgy looks. Black and white is the new black and red. Black and red motorcycle-styled, bomber, leather jackets are perfect for edgy, sexy, and tomboy-chic looks. Other tomboy, mixed with a dose of edge, pieces are Nascar-styled jackets (I was browsing through the Nascar online store and found a replica of Danica Patrick's uniform jacket!) and Letterman jackets in a variety of fascinating hues. Skinny denims paired with sneakers and combat boots, results in an ultra tomboyish look. Skinny denims and pure, solid, black or red pumps gives a sense of edginess mixed with sexy. I can imagine dying my hair jet black, painting my fingernails with OPI red or black polish, and wearing a smokey eye outlined with heavy MAC liquid liner in “Boot Black”. Ah, danger!

Here are the must-have pieces that I've chosen for my wardrobe:

Leopard Print: Ultra Sexy or Plain Tacky?

Leopard print has been around as long as I can remember and there is a reason why. It’s simply a timeless print. However, there has been major debate revolving around whether leopard prints are ultra sexy or just plain tacky. As a person who believes in subtlety and classic pieces, I think there has to be a right amount of leopard print to pull the look off, as in, not being decked out from top to bottom. Accessories can pull together a simple outfit perfectly, such as a clutch or stilettos. But since we’re talking about clothes here, I think the word “subtlety” still applies. If done right, leopard can make a woman look like a sexual goddess. However, I feel if there is one has too much leopard print going on, then you’ll just end up looking like something straight from the zoo. Provided below are a few examples of good amounts of leopard...and too much leopard.

GOOD AMOUNT OF LEOPARD:

Gwen Stefani in leopard print shorts

Gwen Stefani is one of my favorite fashion idols because of her rebellious, punkish flair mixed with femininity and class. In this picture, she is seen rockin’ a pair of high-waist grey and black leopard shorts, paired with a long-sleeve v-neck sweater, white collared shirt, skinny black tie, black sheer stockings and black-pointed platforms. To play up her outfit, she accessorizes her outfit with a little bit of rock-n-roll glamour – studded bracelets and her gold gilded black belt. Her sleek pompadour also pulls together this whole look, creating a fantastic combination of rock-n-roll glamour meets sophisticated and elegant office-lady.

Leopard blouse

Here is another example of a good amount of leopard print – a leopard-printed silk blouse paired with a black pleated skirt, black purse, tortoise-shell sunglasses and a few gold accessories. In addition, I’ve noticed that hairstyles play an important part when it comes to leopard prints. For example, a sleek or a messy up-do versus long-flowing locks can pull together an outfit or make it fall apart. This look here is timeless.

BAD AMOUNT OF LEOPARD:

Wearing a lot of leopard print

Okay, these are examples of TOO much amounts of leopard print. Sure, you can wear a leopard printed dress. There are no written rules saying that you can’t. Think tight fitted, leopard bustier dress. Now, that whole idea screams sexy. However, these looks don’t exactly scream that. Red and leopard print is sexy but Rihanna’s dress just looks way overdone. On the other hand, although Beyonce is sporting a beach-look, her outfit just makes her look outright tacky and some sort of Amazon. I think part of it has to do with her randomly placed peptol-bismol-colored necklace. Lastly, Miley Cyrus’ ill-fitted and faded-looking leopard print designed dress makes her appear washed out.

The conclusion here is that depending on the amount of leopard print, the outfit will allow you to ooze with sexiness or make you look like a downright hot mess. I hope these examples that I have provided help you figure out how to put together the sexually playful kitten look without looking too done up or looking like the exact opposite.

Victoria's Secret Goes Valentine

Sexy lingerie and Valentine's Day for many go hand and hand. But what about all the girls out there who are in between those special someones? Victoria's secret is recognizing the market of sexy and confident singles who don't need a significant other to make Valentines Day a day for celebration.

Victoria's Secret this year launches their "V-Day is Me Day" campaign, with fun, colorful and flirty fashions that are all about the wearer feeling and looking great.

In today's society, Valentine's Day is a very love/hate holiday. Those that are in a relationship love it, while those that aren't don black instead of pink, and spend the day watching slasher movies. Victoria's Secret this year moves to inspire women that it doesn't have to be this way. They can celebrate and love themselves, while still allowing themselves to feel sexy, even if they are the only ones that will be seeing the new line of Valentine inspired bras and panties in the Pink! collection.

Do not fear, Victoria's Secret has not abandoned its ultra sultry and sexy looks, as they still continue to produce a much more "adult" lingerie line for the holiday as well. All of which are available both in-store and online now!
