I run my virtual mouth a lot about trends, so I think it's time to focus on some classics. A timeless piece that I find myself wearing again and again is the simple, curve-hugging pencil skirt.

Like many other girls of my generation, I became aware of this piece, which is both professional and sexy, through the show Mad Men. The pencil skirt defies the idea that workwear must consist of a boxy pantsuit that hides the female form away. Granted, the late sixties was a time of rampant sexism and gender inequality in the workplace and the home. Got that. I'm not saying I have any interest in returning to that era -- but the structured, crisp way of dressing appeals to me. I also feel the need to make a very necessary disclaimer: I do not feel that women should feel that they are under any pressure to present themselves as embodying a particular aesthetic in the office. The focus should always be on achievement itself. I just think that making a conscious choice to wear somewhat body-conscious, feminine clothing in such an atmosphere today lends support to the idea that femininity can exist in the same sphere as keen intelligence and ability. I still plan on kicking ass in the office and seeing women achieve equal pay for equal work within my lifetime. I also plan on looking damn good by my own estimation while doing it.
