Textbook Style on a Budget

Is the cost of tuition and textbooks burning a hole through your pocket?  Then buy a new pair of pants! Wondering how to stay fashionably fabulous, while staying within your budget?  Well, don’t worry your pretty little minds, because I am here to tell you it is possible.  Accumulating a fashionable wardrobe does not have to consist of designer outfits, or apparel from the finest stores.  There are many alternatives like thrift store shopping, bargaining, or even remarkable sales that can help any college student maintain an oh-so-appealing, trend-setting appearance.  Other than learning how to manage my time, I also learned how to manage my budget, and you can do the same.

Wearing Jeans to Work Everyday!

Everyone has plain tops and nude/tan basics in their wardrobe which are indisputably useful, key pieces due to their obvious versatility. The problem is they really don’t make much of a statement when worn all at once, as basic staples so often are.  . . in such cases, throwing a fitted or cropped denim jacket over the ensemble is the perfect way to give an otherwise-bland workday outfit a flirty, casual twist.

Casual Summer Night a la Sofia

You'd be hard-pressed to find someone who wouldn't want to look like Sofia Vergara, but you'd also be hard-pressed to find someone who would want to spend $172 on pants, thousands on a Chanel bag, and hundreds more on a pair of patent leather peep-toes. If you love the look, here's where you can get similar items without spending an arm and a leg, resulting in a casual (but still fashionable) day-to-night outfit. Flash a winning smile and you might even be mistaken for the saucy Columbian star herself!

Summer in a Romper

Rompers, thought once to be a passing trend, have lasted longer than expected. They are, admittedly, quite comfortable and, if worn with the right balance of quirkiness and taste, become an almost innocently girly outfit.

Wearing a romper in a floral print this summer is very becoming. To tone down a floral print, use neutral hues and mix in colors familiar to the original print. Give your romper a little more panache by topping it off with a summer-appropriate Fedora.

Street Style Looks from Fashion Week

While I couldn't get enough of checking out the fashion week shows, it’s hard to get excited about the fall 2011 clothes that are parading down the runways when my mind is stuck on planning my spring wardrobe. Thankfully, there were plenty of shutterbugs storming the fashion week tents and snapping street style photos to inspire our outfits now.

Scott Shuman aka The Satorialist is one of the pioneering street style photographers and always makes the rounds at the major fashion shows, using his eye for detail to spot the best dressed people around. I love this shot of a lovely New Yorker in an all gray palette. Gray is one of the chicest neutrals and is a great way to transition into spring dressing since it’s a lighter color.

Tommy Ton, known for his street style blog Jak & Jil has quickly become one of the darlings of the fashion world and now shoots street style for major publications including Style.com. This fashionista, shot in Milan by Tommy, is rocking one of the spring’s hottest trends, mixed prints. This look is actually easier to pull off than you think, just check out our guide to mixing prints.

The ‘70s look is going to be huge for spring and this lovely lady pulls it off effortlessly. We can all rock this unfussy look with a pair of bell bottom jeans, a loose fitting button up and an oversized blazer on top.

A maxi skirt is a great transitional piece to have, as demonstrated here by Michelle Bobb-Parris who runs the blog Who is Bobb Parris and was shot outside of the London shows. Wear it now as she does with a leather jacket, socks and chunky sandals and strip off the layers as the temperatures raise.
