Alexander McQueen Spring 2011 RTW Collection

When legendary designer Alexander McQueen passed away last February, a lot of cynics raised an eyebrow to the infamous brand's successor. Needless to say, there was a lot of pressure for Sarah Burton. Sarah Burton worked as a designer for McQueen for fourteen years before becoming creative director and eventually being the caretaker of the House of McQueen.

Although a lot of tears were cried in the event of McQueen's death, the show must still go on. Paris Fashion Week was the affair for the revealing of the Alexander McQueen Spring 2011 Collection, which was also Sarah Burton's first full collection for the brand. Staying true to her predecessor's vision, Sarah's new designs for the runway was remarkable, proving her critics wrong.

The show was dramatic, just like old times. If there was one change Sarah did, it was to soften the looks a bit as well as the setting and overall feel of the runway show. We all know that McQueen's iconic vision oftentimes meant extravagantly edgy to even sometimes unconventionally dark. The Spring 2011 collection was more subtle and delicate, which even featured fresh make-up and ethereal hair.

There was a lot of leather as well as organic materials like feather and wheat used in the collection. A few of the pieces that stood out in the sea of theatrical fashion were a mid-thigh hand painted butterfly dress, a sexy leather leaf cut-out dress, a gown made of feathers and a clean white tail coat (which opened the show).

Being a legend's successor is a tough tough job as all eyes will surely be on constant watch over you. Sarah Burton, however, has proven that she has the talent and the guts for the undertaking. With the success of the recent collection she designed, the House of McQueen will last indefinitely and the infamous brand will surely live on.

Remembering Alexander McQueen -- Fashion Icon, 40, Commits Suicide

In case you haven't heard...

Alexander McQueenFeather Wedding Dress British fashion designer Alexander McQueen, a once-rebellious showman and former Givenchy designer,  reportedly hung himself in his London home Thursday.  This tragedy shocks the world, consequently,  on the opening day of New York Fashion Week.

Friends of McQueen say the designer suffered a deep depression when his mother, Joyce McQueen, died last week.

The 40-year old apparel and costume designer enjoyed remarkable success as a student at London's well-known Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, where his college collection was discovered by British editor and stylist Isabella Blow (McQueens' mentor and close friend, this prominent fashion figure also succumbed to suicide in 2007).  With couture collections reflecting his defiant personality, plus a mastery for detail, Alexander McQueen brought style to a level never before seen in British fashion.  Once named the "Hooligan of English Fashion", McQueen will be remembered by everyone from an attention-grabbing celeb clientele to Queen Elizabeth II. Lady Gaga

Alexander McQueen In addition to designing onstage costumes for Michael Jackson, Madonna and movies like Marie Antoinette (2006), Alexander's clients included event planner Mimi Van Wyck, who wore his famous osctrich feather wedding dress, valued at over $10K.  Lady Gaga's ensembles also reflected her love for McQueen, donning muppet-inspired dresses (right) to the new armadillo high heels in her music video for Bad Romance.

McQueen's collections will undoubtedly receive more attention than ever this season, set to appear on the London and Paris Fashion Week Runways.  Alexander McQueen will be remembered for countless astonishing looks inspired from the likes of Cleopatra, Marie Antoinette, recycled trash and footwear inspired by  animals like, well, Armadillos (as in high heels, below, Spring 2010).

Aside from tweeting somber reactions during today's fashion shows, The Cut reports that the Alexander McQueen's downtown  New York boutique has shut its doors until Saturday.   From his closest friends and A-list clients to a world's worth of fashion fans, he will be sorely missed.

Extreme Pumps are the New Thing

It seems like extreme footwear is "in" right now what with Alexander McQueen's now-infamous Spring 2010 "lobster claw-ish" alien shoes, and now Louise Goldin's badass Spring 2010 spiked pumps. The shoes scream fierceness and yeah, you could probably seriously hurt someone while wearing these, but who cares?! They're crazy and hot! You definitely won't need to bring your Mace out with you when you're out on the town; these pumps are already weapons.

Below are some pics of the Alexander McQueen shoes, (in case you may not know what they look like):
