Ear Cuff: Yea or Nay?

I'm sure you've seen this accessory around. Ear cuffs seem to be the new fashion "thing."

Rihanna ear cuffs

This probably means that earrings are passe now. Pity.

I'm not sure how I feel about ear cuffs yet. Yes, the look is experimental and edgy, but I'm not sure how many people can pull it off successfully. Should one take face shape into consideration when picking an ear cuff? Not to mention the risk of having your cool new accessory mistaken for a glorified BlueTooth.

What are your thoughts? Ear cuff: yea or nay?

Forget Turning Green with Envy, I'm Turning Girls Turquoise

I finally received my official "invitation" to join the (completely awesome) website, Pinterest. I was honestly surprised at the things I learned about myself as I began 'pinning'. My pinboards showed some interesting trends in my fashion choices that I wasn't completely aware of. That isn't to say I don't feel like I have my own style, I just didn't realize how much I am drawn to certain styles or colors until I was allowed to make a "pinterest closet" of my fashion fantasies. One thing that popped up over and over again was a color. I was especially drawn to it in accessories but noticed it in outfits and shoes I loved as well. I might as well just come out and say it, I am obsessed with turquoise!!! I don't know if Pinterest is a blessing or a curse, it has taken hours of my time, but in a way I feel like it has enabled to me to better know myself...now I know I can, in fact, be addicted to a website. (HA) Seriously though, there are some amazing products in turquoise available. A few of my favorites were items like these starfish earrings. These handmade beauties positively pop with the turquoise accent and are small enough (3/4" in diameter) to keep your lobes looking dainty. Pairing turquoise with red is hands down my favorite color pairing and these earrings would look amazing with an elegant, but casual white top and red shorts for the summer.

Speaking of summer, hot summer days are some of my favorites to ride my bike, but I've never been one of those girls who can manage to ride a bike and wear heels, wedges, or any shoe with a little height. For my own personal safety I like to stick with flats and a few weeks ago I found these...

I admit, they are men's shoes, but when I can still buy them in a size that fits my women's size 7 1/2 feet, that is of little concern to me. These shoes can be easily made feminine as seen here modeled by Julie Sarinana on her blog, 'Sincerely, Jules'.

Paired with her white jeans that show just a hit of tanned ankle and the cute yellow off-the-shoulder top, Julie shows just enough skin to be subtle and deliciously feminine at the same time, while rocking a great pair of sneakers.

My final turquoise pick was one that was slightly unique from some of the others found on my board. These I searched out deliberately like a lion stalking its prey. I knew what I wanted, strike that, what I NEEDED. The last two months have been filled with days, even weeks of relentless rain. From indoors, rain can be kind of romantic (I suppose) if that's something you enjoy, but as a student trekking back and forth across campus, in the rain, it's absolutely miserable. I first started looking for a pair of rain boots right around the time I discovered my turquoise fetish. Is it any wonder that I picked this pair to be my savior from the rain?

The bad news is that this particular brand and color is sold out, but don't worry, there are similar styles available in different brands in case someone else is as crazy about turquoise as I am.

This is only a partial example of my own personal and growing obsession, with no end in sight. Turquoise, especially when paired with red, but also with other shades of blue, like royal blue, and crisp whites, grays, and even prints are guaranteed to garner a few compliments. Trust me.

Shopping Your Grandmother's Closet

Living with my Grandmother, I always rummage through her old things. Photo albums, files, even random boxes of junk. I adore the aged, almost decrepit smell of her belongings shoved away in dusty trunks and boxes, and every time I go through her things it’s like I am transported back into the 40’s, 50’s or 60’s. My absolute favorite thing of my Grandmother’s to explore is her closet. There are an abundance of treasures that I have found in my Grandmother’s closet, and the best part? It’s all free! I’ll be telling all of you what you should be looking for when shopping your Grandmother’s (or Mother’s, Aunt’s, Long-lost-cousin’s...) closet, as well as some of my best finds.

The first, and my personal favorite thing that you should keep your eye out for is of course, jewelry! “Back in the day”, pearls were really popular -- a timeless look that will surely never go out of style. And they didn’t have Forever 21 or any of those cheap chain-retail stores (no offense) so you can bet that almost all of their pearls and other necklaces are real. I’ve found some amazing pearl necklaces that could easily be worth over $300 today. I’ve also found some great vintage earrings that are so unique and distinct from anything being sold in the shops today. You can find all types of great vintage earrings, from huge square gold studs, to elegant teardrop diamonds. Another great piece of jewelry I often come across is brooches. Brooches can add that extra touch of vintage glamor to any outfit. Pin it to the front of your button-up sort of as a “bow tie”, or your collar. You can even pin them to your purses or clutches, and shoes too!

Vintage clothes

Scarves are also something that I come across very often while exploring through my Grandmother’s things. I found a huge bin filled with all types of silk scarves, and most of them were in really good condition. They were printed with unique designs, like maps and anchors, and came in all different shapes and sizes. A scarf can be used in place of a necklace, or you can even wrap a scarf around a metal bib necklace for a more structured look. You can put them in your hair, and tie them to your purse, or put them in your pocket in place of a pocket square. Vintage scarves are very vibrant and unique, unlike anything I’ve seen in a modern retail shop. The interesting thing is that most vintage scarves were silk, and used year-round, not just in the cold months. My favorite vintage look with a scarf is the “casual Sunday driving” look, as I like to call it. That is, use the scarf as a head wrap, tying it under your chin, and put on a huge pair of sunglasses for that effortless feel.

It seems as though everything was made with much better quality in the 40’s through 60’s. My number one favorite find that I’ve ever found in my Grandmother’s closet was a pair of vintage, high-waisted jeans, in perfect condition. The denim is much thicker and sturdier than any modern type of denim jean that I’ve worn. I tried them on and I couldn’t believe that they actually fit me. I instantly fell in love. Always look for anything denim! The quality is simply so much better. High-waisted shorts are also another one of my favorite finds. I stay away from those “fake” high-waisted shorts, from Urban Outfitters or American Apparel. They’re honestly just not the same. When I’m wearing a piece of clothing following the vintage trend I want it to be just that—real vintage!

You don’t have to go to a vintage shop or consignment store to find great vintage clothing and accessories. Ask your grandparents, older relatives, or maybe you’ve made some friends at a retirement home. Not only will you find some amazing things that surely no one else will have, but you’ll also learn a lot about the history behind the clothing.

How to Have an "Ear for Fashion"

Earrings don’t seem to be getting the attention they deserve in the fashion world. You can spice up any look with a little ear accessorizing, and did you know that with the right earrings you can flatter the shape of your face as well?

I’ve always felt a degree of discomfort with my long, thin face and huge, you-can’t-miss-it forehead. Now that I’m in my 20’s I’ve finally found a hairstylist that treats me like a goddess and gives me gorgeous side swept bangs to hide my humongous ‘fivehead’ as the boys called it in middle school, but it took a little longer for me to learn how to manipulate my face by what I hang next to it.

For my long face I love to accessorize with full bodied earrings like chandelier shapes, medium sized hoops or teardrop shapes. Wearing an earring with some width provides a full face effect virtually making my face look more rounded, by softening the long lines.

For a round face you’ll want to accessorize a little differently. Stay away from the chandelier and tear drop looks, these will only work to make your face increasingly round. Instead you’ll want to try dangly earrings. Most lengths will look fabulous, but angular earrings can also help add angles to your face in addition to the lengthening effect the dangle provides.

You ladies out there with oval faces, I envy you! You can wear virtually any earring from studs to crazy spirals. You have the most dynamic face shape for any look. I would just caution you to reconsider really long dangly earrings that can potentially weigh you down making a cute oval shape appear too long.

Lovely heart shaped faces are challenged with a wide forehead, angular cheeks and a chin that comes to a decisive point. For you ladies chandelier and teardrop earrings are your most flattering picks. They will help soften the width of the forehead and the angles your cheek bones form. Stay away from earrings that mirror the shape of your face or that come to a tapered point similar to your chin.

If your face resembles a square you’ll want to pick out a pair of earrings that can subdue your features like rounded earrings, hoops, or even longer tear drop designs. If your face is long enough to be considered rectangular you’re better off keeping your earrings a little shorter, you don’t want to add too much length to your face.

And finally, the best part is when in doubt remember: all women look good in a small to medium-sized hoop earrings. Now the only challenge you’ll face is deciding on your favorite pair!

Keep Romping Through the Seasons

The mini romper is the key to beating the heat, as declared by the fashion and beauty experts at WhoWhatWear.com. According to their trend report, "the mini romper is swiftly becoming another standout staple. Already a go-to piece for fashionable ladies like Sienna Miller and Whitney Port, these adorable one-pieces are a necessity for looking—and feeling—cool right now."

As Summer transitions into Fall however, you'll need to be savvy with your accessories if you want to get the most longevity out of your favorite playsuit. Hilary Duff gives us a great example of how to take the piece in a new direction by adding a light cardigan and a thick belt (which can be worn low on the hips or higher to cinch the waist and is particularly cute with rompers that are already ruched as Hil's appears to be) along with neutral-colored heeled sandals (definitely worth investing in a comfy pair because they go with everything and are multi-seasonal). She finishes off the look with retro plastic shades and large metal earrings, exemplary of her signature boho style.

A floral-print multicolored romper makes the job of finding matching cardigans and belts a bit easier since you have more options in terms of color, but it can also be cute to keep your accessories and layers neutral and let the colorful romper really pop, like this adorable one that's currently available in the smashion marketplace.
