Closet Roll Call

Teachers take roll in the beginning of class to know who is in attendance. Over the semester, they collect data on how many times each person shows up to class. Sometimes this attendance counts for a grade, and sometimes it doesn't. However, the fact of the matter is that the more one shows up to class, the higher one's grades are in said class. So, where am I going with this? Well, I recently took inventory of my closet and noticed a few items that I wear constantly, so much so that I'm wearing them out. From me, they get an A+. Like these:

These flats (which I have on my feet right now) are my all time favorites. They are understated, comfortable, but still trendy. For shoes so simple, I get tons of compliments on them, and they match virtually everything.

This shirt is my go-to for days when I don't want to get dressed. It is from J.Crew, but I believe that the style is retired, so try to find something similar. It pairs perfect with black leggings or jeans for a nautical look.

This blouse is one of my favorites (also from J.Crew, but unfortunately also retired), but any basic floral blouse that does not have too many colors makes for a great casual look, but can also look striking under a blazer for a meeting.

Grey Lightweight Wool Blazer, bananarepublic.com, $69.99 (sale)

This blazer is one of my favorites in my closet. It is a great asset to my work wardrobe, but also has become one of my favorite casual pieces as well. I usually roll up the sleeves to expose the black lining. The grey is less harsh than a black blazer, so it pulls together almost every outfit that I own.

TOMS Grey Metallic Woven Vegan Classics, toms.com, $54

Like the grey blazer, these Metallic Grey TOMS are a favorite of mine. They have a little bit of sparkle, but not full sequins, so they are perfect. TOMS are so comfortable, so when I am feeling lazy, I just throw them on and feel a little hipster. Mine are worn out, so I am certainly looking for a new pair in the new future. Any suggestions?

Floral Print and Tassel Scarf in Cream/Multi, forever21.com, sold out

This scarf has seen a lot. When I bought it, I was skeptical about the tassels, but the pastels and the flowers are the perfect compliment to any outfit. The material is gauzy enough for spring, but easy in the winter as well. I will confess that I actually have cut off some of the tassels (there were a lot).

So that's it. A peek into some of the recurring characters in many of my outfits. I would love to know what creatures haunt your closets.

Spring Cleaning

Throughout my entire life, I've been a mentally organized person.  I know when I have to be somewhere or when I have to do an assignment, and I get it done.  Sometimes, though, my desk, my bedroom and especially my closet appear to be a little unorganized.  I like to think of it more as an organized mess -- I know where everything is, even that striped tunic in the pile on the floor.  But eventually things get a little too messy for even me accept.  It doesn't help that I've been sharing a closet with my roommate, so although it would normally be a decent size in regards to the size of our small apartment, it seems much smaller with two of us cramming our wardrobes (and other random items) inside.

Okay, so maybe the above photo is a bit of a dramatized version of what my closet was starting to look like, but this weekend I decided it was time to clean things up a bit.  A heat wave rolled through my area, and I was ready to break out my shorts and sundresses, only to find I had nowhere to put them.  So, I painstakingly removed everything from my shelves, refolded and set aside things to be put into storage until the colder weather comes again (unless global warming causes my building to burst into flames before then).  Afterwords, I felt great.  I had defeated the scary monster that was my winter wardrobe, and my closet actually felt bigger and more positive.  I didn't want to cry every time I entered it any longer.

If you're anything like me, you may want to take this time to do some spring cleaning as well.  You'll likely find items you forgot about and get excited to add them into your spring wardrobe.  It's like shopping without leaving your own home -- and it's free!

Some lifesavers my wardrobe could not survive without are inexpensive space organizers from Ikea and the like.  I have under the bed storage drawers for small items, but I don't actually have a dresser here, so the closet has to provide a home for folded clothes as well as items on hangers.  To maximize space, I use the organizers pictured below to store folded clothes and shoes in a hanging space where I could normally hang maybe only five or six shirts.

A shoe shelf, like the one below, might also be a good alternative if you have some low space available on the bottom of your closet.

Unfortunately, now that my closet is a bit more organized, it's still far from my chic, organized dream closet, but it will do for now.  Find some inspiration from the following images to keep your own closet clean and tidy.  These images are simple, neat and much more attainable than some over the top celebrity closets I've seen, which appear to cover more square footage than my entire home.

Remember, our closets are home to our precious fashions, which we spend so much time and money collecting, so it really is important to keep them in top shape.  Your clothes will thank you.

Conquering Your Closet

Carrie Bradshaw closet

Why can’t I have Carrie Bradshaw’s closet from the Sex In The City movie? I mean, I know, I know. I am not some NYC girl who just so happens to land me a rich boyfriend who I nicknamed Mr. Big. But hey, I have a lot of stuff in my closet as well that needs just as much room and I have no idea on earth how I am going to organize it the way I want it. I know we all can’t have extremely huge closets that were personally built for us in our New York City Park Avenue Apartment. I have, however, come to the realization that just because I don’t live a SATC life doesn’t mean that I can't attempt to make my closet as organized and fashionable as Carrie’s closet. Okay, so I don’t have nearly as much stuff as Carrie Bradshaw to work with but the frustration of an overstuffed, unorganized closet is something that most of us can understand. So it is time to set aside one full day that you can dedicate to a little wardrobe makeover.

Organizing closet

1) Sedona Low Open Tote, Crate and Barrel, $19.95

This basket would be great to use as storage for your purses. The best location would be the top shelf of your closet and whenever you want to choose a bag just pull it down and they will all be neatly set next to one another.

2) Michael Graves Under Bed Chest, Target, $15.99

Whatever season you're not in...store all those clothes! Big, bulky winter jackets only take up unnecessary room. Room that should be used for possibly some new summer dresses?

3) Faux Leather 3-Tier Shoe Rack, Target $22.59

Shoe racks are a must. Not only will this make for more room in your closet, but it also ensures your shoes don't get damaged or lost.

4) Jewelry Hanger, woodlore.com, $24.95

Say good-bye to tangled necklaces, lost earrings, and junky jewels. This jewelry hanger is a perfect way to make all of your items visible, easily accessible, and you can just hang it in your closet!

5) Deluxe Shoe Cabinet Collection, Target, $50.99

Another great shoe rack to store your collection.

6) Row Of Hooks, Pottery Barn, $29.00

Racks are fabulous for coats, scarves, and hats. Leaving them all in your eyesight, reminding you of nice items that you previously would have forgotten about.

Wide Open Spaces

My closet right now is a big, gaping hole. Trying not to be a procrastinator as I usually am has forced me to pack up all my clothes with about five days to spare before I leave for college. So until then, the sad sight of underused hanging space and hollow drawers will be staring me down. But when you are going to a college across the country from home, like I am, will you still want all your "comfort clothes" that you and all your friends have practically worn out? California's central coast, where I'm from, is all about Vans and laid-back jeans and tanks and tees. Granted, as a fashionista, I expand my style, but I definitely have days where blending in sounds like a good idea.

New college fashionistas, should we ditch the old threads and wait to shop in our new home and soak in that style, or bring a piece of our home with us? I think there is a balance. I don't need to lug every gym shirt I've ever owned to college. But that one with the local burger shack logo might offer some comfort on a rainy, lonely day in the first few weeks. And all the clothes that express your style from high school: don't throw away what you like in order to fit your new setting. You should still be yourself. Bring your style to the college mix, and as you evolve in your new environment, your wardrobe will too. You can always leave a few old, tatty memories in your empty closet to come home to.

Empty Closet

Digging Deep

Vintage hunting in Mom’s closet.

“I can’t believe you’re wearing that!” I get this quite often from my mother who will look up from her reading when I walk in, squint at me and recognize an article of clothing that had at one point been buried in the back of her closet. Even though she says she never throws anything out, every so often my mom does a little spring-cleaning of her seemingly endless piles of clothing.

Vintage gems

“Anything you want, take it,” she says, hauling out armfuls of cashmere sweaters, Italian leather flats and A-line skirts. At this point, my dad, seeing that the room is being taken over by thirty years worth of knitwear, goes upstairs in search of solitude.

Some of my favorite pieces belonged to my mom—a few years ago she gave up a sleeveless cable-knit top made of raw silk by a company which has probably since gone extinct. There is also a pair of sandals she got from Italy over 25 years ago. And a dress that her mother made for her when she was in high school. “Everything’s back in style again,” she laughs.

Vintage shoes

The most comfortable of my acquisitions was a maroon pullover knit sweater. My mom said she got it from her aunt who had made it. I wore it all winter and secretly delighted when I saw its twin on store racks last season.

Among the piles which periodically take over the bed and surrounding floor, I have pulled a camel hair skirt, a now-vintage Ralph Lauren denim vest, and plenty of old t-shirts which I saw selling for £15 in London vintage stores.

The greatest find, however, was the dress I wore to the winter ball my junior year in high school. This silk sleeveless number has a fitted top and a full circle skirt that falls below the knee.  The dress is a Jonathan Logan piece, an American ready to wear company established in 1944. Where did it come from you may ask?

Yet another closet find—this time my grandmother’s. She bought it sometime in the late-1950s, this was after she had already given birth to three children. When I tried the dress on again today, it was still a bit of a tight fit—and my mom says I’ve lost weight, so how grandma managed it is beyond me.

Vintage 50s dress

It’s not just clothing which makes its way from mom’s closet to mine.  My favorite travel bag accompanied my mom on her trip to Europe in the ‘80s. It’s just the right size—and a recognizably unique green, making it easy to spot amongst the endless trail of black suitcases at the luggage claim.

So if you don’t mind slightly worn items with some great stories attached, before hitting the vintage stores, I recommend looking a little closer to home.
