Best Dressed at MTV VMA's 2012

While some were eager to find out which celebrity was going to win the "Best Video" or "Song of the Year" Award, most were obsessed with what the celebrities were going to wear on the red carpet! It's no surprise that Nicki Minaj was on the "Worst Dressed" list this year -- as she is every year -- but some celebrities shocked us by doing a complete Fashion 180, as they finally made it to the "Best Dressed" list. And here are the nominees:

5) Taylor Swift

MTV VMA's 2012 Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift looked edgy, for the first time ever! She wore a pantsuit by J. Mendel and looked "bad" with her red lipstick and dark eyeliner. To go for an even edgier look, she had bangs. We usually expect the country girl look from America's known sweetheart, but this year, she totally surprised us. Nice going, Taylor!

4) Pink

MTV VMA's 2012 Pink

We never know what to expect from Pink, but we did not expect this. In fact, we didn't expect her to make a comeback at all, but she definitely shocked us when she rolled down the red carpet in this metallic, beaded gown by Stella McCartney. The gown toned down her slightly muscular body, and made her look girly as opposed to her always looking like a tom-boy.

3) Miley Cyrus

MTV VMA's 2012 Miley Cyrus

Despite the fact that many criticized Miley Cyrus for her new haircut, it worked well with her black dress. With an all blonde short haircut and dark gown designed by Emilio Pucci, we could no longer see Cyrus as the little girl that we once saw her as. She has definitely grown into a fine young woman, and by the look of her outfit, we can see that her taste in fashion is also going in the right direction.

2) Katy Perry

MTV VMA's 2012 Katy Perry

All I can say about Katy Perry's outfit is WOW! She usually goes for the playful look, that involves shorts and colorful wigs, but she took a different route for this year's VMA's. She wore a gown made by Elie Saab with a major train, and her decision to keep her hair simple didn't take away from the elegance of the dress.

1) Rihanna

Rihanna's fashion sense is always on top, which is why it was no surprise as to why she's number 1...AGAIN, on this year's "best dressed" list. Unlike the other celebrities, her gown was custom made by her personal stylist, Adam Selman. Some were afraid as to how her new haircut would look, but it definitely complements the dress. If Rihanna continues to put faith in her stylist, then we can put faith that she will continue to be number 1 on the fashion charts.

The Amazing Emma Stone

Emma Stone has been making a splash on the red carpet movie premieres for her new film The Amazing Spider Man. She has worn garments by some of the top fashion designers in the industry and I must say that her red carpet style is on point and very inspiring. So to celebrate the lovely Ms. Stone and her first Vogue magazine cover here are some pics of my favorite looks that she has rocked.

Here Emma is shown at the Paris premiere of the film wearing a gown from the Fall 2012 RTW Gucci collection and Christian Louboutin pumps. This look is very gothic inspired and yet still romantic.

Here she wears an Emilio Pucci dress, also from the Fall 2012 RTW runways, in ice blue. It is obvious that her style is evolving right in front of our eyes. The pairing of a nude heel with the pencil skirt looks great and elongates her legs.

At the London premiere of the movie, Emma wore a pant suit with a plunging neckline from the Fall 2012 RTW collection by Elie Saab. This jumpsuit is mature, youthful and elegant all rolled up into one. She kept her hair and makeup simple and let the pantsuit take the spotlight.

And last but certainly not least, here is a picture of her first Vogue cover which hits stands in July. I can't wait to get my copy in the mail!

I look forward to seeing what Emma chooses to wear for the red carpet circuit of her new film Gangster Squad starring Crazy, Stupid, Love costar Ryan Gosling (*Drool*).

Celebrity Gold-Best Pieces of Fashion Advice By Stars

Celebrities have been known to say some crazy things. There was the Jessica Simpson “Chicken of the Sea” debacle, the infamous forgetting of the National Anthem by Christina Aguilera, and a particularly embarrassing statement concerning starving children by Mariah Carey. Despite all this misspeak, celebrities are undeniably a source of fashion inspiration, and have been known to give out some pretty legitimate style advice. Here’s a collection of the top five best pieces of wisdom by celebrities...

1. “When you are ready to leave the house, remove one item [of jewelry], now you’re ready.” –Coco Chanel

Where better to begin than Ms. Chanel herself? This speaks to the timeless rule that less is more, and I promise, people notice. Don’t believe me? I first heard this quote from my ex-boyfriend who applauded my decision to not wear a ring and bracelet on the same hand.

2. “I dress sexily - but not in an obvious way. Sexy in a virginal way.” –Victoria Beckham

This is important. Really important. Posh’s advice can be put into practice virtually all the time: when you’re going out, at work, on a date. It’s all about leaving something to the imagination and drawing the line between sophisticated and Snooki.

3. “I am a walking piece of art every day […]” –Lady Gaga

While we don’t all need to take this as literally as Lady Gaga, it still holds a lot of insight into developing a style that really reflects who you are.

4. “I wish I had invented blue jeans. They have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity -- all I hope for in my clothes." –Yves Saint Laurent

When dressing for style, we often forget the basics. Done right, a pair of blue jeans can be the perfect starting point for a chic look—just make sure you’ve done your research and bought a pair that flatters your figure.

5. “I almost resent the whole fashion thing. Good God—never wearing the same thing twice and all those things. It’s a pain in the ass.” –Jennifer Aniston

In the end, it’s important to know that fashion rules are meant to be broken. Try to experiment with what makes you feel comfortable and beautiful and skip the religiosity of perfecting the current trends. If you are confident with your style, it will show.

Advice

For the Love of Our Bodies (…and Christina Hendricks)

Christina Hendricks
Emmys 2010

Recently, while home for winter break, I attended a gathering at my brother’s house. It began like any other night, hanging about, playing cards, having a couple of drinks—nothing out of the ordinary. The conversation, while a little less than stimulating, flowed comfortably and everyone was having a good time. Eventually we began talking about our “dream celebrities”—you know, those celebrities who you would give your left foot to look like/hang out with/ seduce/pull a Freaky Friday with. This line of discussion is not unusual in a social situation. There are certain women we can all agree won the lottery in the looks department (yes, we KNOW that Beyonce is a goddess...can we move on now?) Some celebrities, such as Angelina Jolie, are more controversial (she is a beautiful woman, undeniably, but a little TOO out—of-this-world for my taste.) So amidst cries of “Lindsay Lohan!” and “Mila Kunis!” I fearlessly added “Christina Hendricks!”

Full disclaimer: To me, Christina Hendricks is the epitome of womanhood. Not only is she flawlessly beautiful, she is an actual SIZE. And the best thing about her? She doesn’t harp on about it. I’ve always personally felt that “larger” women in Hollywood (I put “larger” in quotation marks because that word constitutes someone, well, normal, in the Entertainment Industry) who feel the need to constantly make statements about being “big, bold, beautiful women and I proud of it” almost just as bad as the skinny standards that make us so insecure. To me, that just sounds like “SEE SEE SEE I AM COMFORTABLE WITH MY BODY SO I’M GOING TO SHOUT ABOUT IT SO I CAN’T HEAR THE INSECURITIES RUNNING THROUGH MY HEAD!” But I digress.

Christina Hendricks is poised, kind, and on a purely surface level (which was the point of this conversation, initially) physically flawless. She is not gorgeous because of her size; she is gorgeous because she just is.

So you can imagine my horror when, upon my proclamation of my girl X-tina’s bodacious bod, a girl across the room wrinkles her nose and yells “No way! She needs liposuction!” I imagine the look on my face was just as murderous as the thoughts running through my head, because my brother quickly tried to shush the completelyandutterlycrazy witch sitting across from me. But she stood strong.

“Have you SEEN her thighs?”

I took a deep breath, I counted to ten. And then I said, with utter conviction “You, my friend, are everything that is wrong with our society.”

And I stand by that statement. It would have been bad enough if the girl had suggested that Hendricks needed to jump on a treadmill or go on a diet (Read: she doesn’t.) But things were taken a step further when this girl’s first thought was that a beautiful woman needed surgery to somehow “fix” her body. A woman who is proportional, a woman who is comfortable, a woman who is healthy. Is this actually what our world has come to? At the first sign of physical imperfection, our first thought is to go under the knife?

First of all, I’m the first person to be all: “People are dying of AIDS and malaria all over the world and you think a major medical concern is cosmetic fat surgery????” I am of the opinion that for every dollar a person spends on gratuitous cosmetic surgery they should have to match that dollar amount and give it to AIDS research.

But this isn’t exclusively meant to be a tirade against plastic surgery. The main point here is as a society in general WE HAVE TO STOP THINKING THAT WE CAN “FIX” OUR BODIES. Don’t get me wrong, we can be healthy and we can tone, etc. But the thing that society has failed to teach us, especially young girls, is that you cannot change the actual shape of your body. There may seem to be a certain element of “no duh” in that statement, but having suffered under the misconception myself for years, no matter how much dieting we do, how much we exercise, or how much surgery we get, that will not automatically make us have a Keira Knightley-esque bone structure. Our bodies have certain blue prints that are just never going to change. I’ve found that this is something I have to remind myself of everyday, but this is a truth that once you truly internalize it: I promise YOU ARE FREE. By all means, exercise and be healthy, take care of your body, be the best “you” you can be...just remember that in order to be that, you have to stop fighting against yourself. It is a losing battle, I promise. We will never all be the Jessica Alba’s and Biel’s of the world, but we can all at least one day be comfortable.

And for goodness sake. Leave Christina Hendricks out of it. She is a goddess.

Golden Globes 2012: Radiant Roses and Dim Daisies
