For the Love of Our Bodies (…and Christina Hendricks)

Christina Hendricks
Emmys 2010

Recently, while home for winter break, I attended a gathering at my brother’s house. It began like any other night, hanging about, playing cards, having a couple of drinks—nothing out of the ordinary. The conversation, while a little less than stimulating, flowed comfortably and everyone was having a good time. Eventually we began talking about our “dream celebrities”—you know, those celebrities who you would give your left foot to look like/hang out with/ seduce/pull a Freaky Friday with. This line of discussion is not unusual in a social situation. There are certain women we can all agree won the lottery in the looks department (yes, we KNOW that Beyonce is a goddess...can we move on now?) Some celebrities, such as Angelina Jolie, are more controversial (she is a beautiful woman, undeniably, but a little TOO out—of-this-world for my taste.) So amidst cries of “Lindsay Lohan!” and “Mila Kunis!” I fearlessly added “Christina Hendricks!”

Full disclaimer: To me, Christina Hendricks is the epitome of womanhood. Not only is she flawlessly beautiful, she is an actual SIZE. And the best thing about her? She doesn’t harp on about it. I’ve always personally felt that “larger” women in Hollywood (I put “larger” in quotation marks because that word constitutes someone, well, normal, in the Entertainment Industry) who feel the need to constantly make statements about being “big, bold, beautiful women and I proud of it” almost just as bad as the skinny standards that make us so insecure. To me, that just sounds like “SEE SEE SEE I AM COMFORTABLE WITH MY BODY SO I’M GOING TO SHOUT ABOUT IT SO I CAN’T HEAR THE INSECURITIES RUNNING THROUGH MY HEAD!” But I digress.

Christina Hendricks is poised, kind, and on a purely surface level (which was the point of this conversation, initially) physically flawless. She is not gorgeous because of her size; she is gorgeous because she just is.

So you can imagine my horror when, upon my proclamation of my girl X-tina’s bodacious bod, a girl across the room wrinkles her nose and yells “No way! She needs liposuction!” I imagine the look on my face was just as murderous as the thoughts running through my head, because my brother quickly tried to shush the completelyandutterlycrazy witch sitting across from me. But she stood strong.

“Have you SEEN her thighs?”

I took a deep breath, I counted to ten. And then I said, with utter conviction “You, my friend, are everything that is wrong with our society.”

And I stand by that statement. It would have been bad enough if the girl had suggested that Hendricks needed to jump on a treadmill or go on a diet (Read: she doesn’t.) But things were taken a step further when this girl’s first thought was that a beautiful woman needed surgery to somehow “fix” her body. A woman who is proportional, a woman who is comfortable, a woman who is healthy. Is this actually what our world has come to? At the first sign of physical imperfection, our first thought is to go under the knife?

First of all, I’m the first person to be all: “People are dying of AIDS and malaria all over the world and you think a major medical concern is cosmetic fat surgery????” I am of the opinion that for every dollar a person spends on gratuitous cosmetic surgery they should have to match that dollar amount and give it to AIDS research.

But this isn’t exclusively meant to be a tirade against plastic surgery. The main point here is as a society in general WE HAVE TO STOP THINKING THAT WE CAN “FIX” OUR BODIES. Don’t get me wrong, we can be healthy and we can tone, etc. But the thing that society has failed to teach us, especially young girls, is that you cannot change the actual shape of your body. There may seem to be a certain element of “no duh” in that statement, but having suffered under the misconception myself for years, no matter how much dieting we do, how much we exercise, or how much surgery we get, that will not automatically make us have a Keira Knightley-esque bone structure. Our bodies have certain blue prints that are just never going to change. I’ve found that this is something I have to remind myself of everyday, but this is a truth that once you truly internalize it: I promise YOU ARE FREE. By all means, exercise and be healthy, take care of your body, be the best “you” you can be...just remember that in order to be that, you have to stop fighting against yourself. It is a losing battle, I promise. We will never all be the Jessica Alba’s and Biel’s of the world, but we can all at least one day be comfortable.

And for goodness sake. Leave Christina Hendricks out of it. She is a goddess.

Golden Globes 2012: Radiant Roses and Dim Daisies

Award Season is nigh in Hollywood and all the stars are engaging in Hunger Games-esque warfare to steal the spotlight for best (and worst) looks. On the red carpet at this year's Golden Globes, there was a sharp divide between the fabulously, fashionable dames and the shabby, second-rate spinsters. Although only a few looks took my breath away, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing all of the hits and missteps equally. At the top of my Radiant Roses list:

Stylishly Divorced

Spring is truly the season of love. Flowers blossoming, birds chirping and the brilliant sun accompanied by the blue sky makes us want to open more than our windows of our car when we drive to the beach--it makes us want to open up our bodies with low-cut button-ups and bikinis. We wear the shortest of shorts and for a brief time you hearts aren't worn on sleeves because people simply aren’t wearing any.

Unfortunately, spring doesn’t lead into a romantic summer. Fairly recently, great women including Sandra Bullock and Maria Shriver have separated from their husbands--gloomy facts which get you thinking about Hollywood’s other not-so happily ever after fairy tales. We all remember Jennifer Aniston’s split from Brad Pitt and we were all more or less surprised about Jennifer Lopez’s separation from Marc Anthony. Nevertheless, despite dealing with lights and cameras during these difficult times, each one has made their first appearance--with style and grace.

In a deep-blue, dazzling and unforgettable gown, Maria Shriver made her first big appearance at Oprah’s Farewell Spectacular event soon after the news of her husband’s infidelity was made public. Her dress was exquisite and it wasn’t the only thing that sparkled; her smile flashed as light shun on her too.

Like Shriver, Bullock made her first big appearance after her separation at Spike TV’s annual Guys Choice Awards and received the Troops Choice Award for Entertainer of the Year. In a shiny, sleek, little-black dress, Bullock smiled confidently nearly every second she was on stage. More importantly, she showed her ability to move along with life and its disappointments, accepting the bad along with the good.

And of course, we all recall the separation of Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt and still harbor some hard feelings towards the guy. The 2009 Oscars was the first time Aniston appeared at an event both Brad and Jolie attended. She shined and sparkled in a silver bejeweled gown and beside her, her at the time boyfriend John Mayer. Aniston had it going on: the dress, the glimmer, the flickering gems—the smile.

Sometimes when we are down, when we are sad, when we are broken, (this may sound shallow but hear me out) clothes have a way of making us feel…good. Better. Confident. An expensive, bedazzled dress along with a hopeful smile can make you noticeable—in a good way. There's nothing wrong with adorning yourself in an expensive gown. It's difficult to describe but by wearing something expensive or nice, it's as if we are able to remind ourselves we are worth it, even if the one we love the most didn't realize it.

Head to Toe Color

Out of the many trends taken straight off the runway from the Fall 2011 shows, there is one that stands out as being not only one of the most wearable but also ridiculously simple and totally fun. Monochromatic dressing, or wearing a similar color palette from head to toe, makes not only a powerful style impact but can also be one of the most flattering ways to wear color to make you look your best. All it requires is the ability to mix and match what you already have in your closet in a new way. And what could be easier than that?

Taking a cue from these style-setters, monochromatic looks work best when mixing different shades of the same color, like pairing a blood orange blouse with a fire-engine red skirt and maroon booties or choosing a palette of dusty pink, beige and off-white. By combining multiple colors but sticking to a restrained color palette and emphasizing different textures, you can be perfectly on trend. Only the rainbow limits your options.

Celebrity Fashion Lines

It seems as though every famous celebrity has a clothing line today.  Although some of these lines are great and fashionable, others are lack luster.  Most of these celebrities with lines don't even have the greatest taste in fashion.  It just seems like fashion is turning into another area in which these celebrities can make their money off of their fans.  Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy most of the lines they come out with. However, I don't like the high price tags that come along with it for some.

Here are some lines I enjoy, but wish were lower priced:

Although many don't necessarily like the Kardashians, I think they are great impacters on girls and fashionistas today.  They have an amazing sense of style and aren't afraid to wear things that people may question.  In addition to their Bebe line, it is rumored that they are producing a line for Sears.  As for Lindsay Lohan's line.. I know she is not exactly the poster child for stability or of role model status right now, but her style when she was at her prime was amazing.  She really wears whatever she feels is right for herself and rocks it her own way.  Lastly, Victoria Beckham didn't get her nickname "Posh" for nothing. This woman has incredible taste and is a true fashionista.

While there are great celebrity lines, there are also celebrity fragrances too.  We all know about Britney Spears' line, but their are other celebrities who are starting to create their own too.  For example, Lady GaGa, Khole Kardashian-Odom and husband Lamar Odom, Katy Perry, and Jersey Shores' Sammi "Sweetheart" Giancola. I know most of you may be thinking.. Sammi "Sweetheart" really?? But let's face it, MTV has made people like Sammi famous for no reason, so why not get more money off of making perfume or clothing.

Celebrity Fashion lines can be fun to look at and purchase if reasonable, but do they have to dominate the market and gain more profits? If their lines were reasonably priced, I think it would make more people willing to buy and accepted into the market.
