I Found You, Miss New Bootie(s)

You know, there's actually a fair amount of similarity between a good "bootie" and a good "booty." Obviously, neither I nor anyone else has the right to decide what constitutes "good" for the latter, but conventional societal standards generally dictate that it shouldn't be toooo round, nor toooo flat, but juuuust right– what Goldilocks would consider the ultimate porridge of posteriors, if you will. Crass as this may seem, I recently found that I actually follow the same wisdom when it comes to booties in the sartorial sense.

My quest to find the perfect bootie actually began in 2009, when I asked for a pair of black, high-heeled, close-toed, stiletto booties for Christmas. Unfortunately, they've become one of those glamorous gifts I spend more time ogling in my closet than actually wearing on my body, because they're just not very practical and – gorgeous as they are – are also not really my style. Do you occasionally find yourself, for some inexplicable reason. lusting after something you know totally isn't you, convinced all the while that if you had them you'd figure out a way to incorporate them into your wardrobe? Well, sometimes that works out. This time it didn't.

I then forgot how much I wanted a pair of booties until Spring semester of last year, when I studied abroad in Sweden. If you read the Stockholm Street Style blog or have seen any pictures The Sartorialist has taken in Stockholm, you know that Swedes are undeniably stylish and often at the forefront of new fashion trends. While I was there, I couldn't help but notice that almost every woman I passed had on suede ankle booties, so it should have come as no surprise when, upon arriving back in the States, Isabel Marant's "Dicker" boots were impossible to get away from:

Celebs in booties
L to R: Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Hilary Rhoda, Kate Bosworth, and Katie Holmes in "Dicker" boots

Bottom line: I spent a good portion of 2011 wishing for these boots. Too bad they retailed for around $615 and none of the alternatives I saw were really what I was looking for. Everything I seemed to find at a reasonable price point was either too round or pointy in the toe and/or too flat or high in the heel. I wanted what, for me, would be just right.

Luckily, they finally came at the 11th hour when, in December, I discovered these on Madewell's website:

Zipcode Boot, Madewell.com, $188
Zipcode Boot, madewell.com, $188

At $188, they're definitely a splurge, but I received them as a belated gift a few weeks ago and haven't been able to take them off since. As the celebrities above demonstrate, you can wear them with practically anything and during any season (I've been pairing them with tights, winter dresses/skirts, cardigans/sweaters, and scarves). I also love the color (though they come in black and an olive-y tone, too) and that the suede adds a little ruggedness.

If you prefer something that is a bit more polished and has a higher heel, but will still convey a similar type of downtown-chic-with-a-Western-edge that the Marant or Madewell booties do, try to find a pair like these Lucky Brand ones:

Lucky Brand Fedora Booties, Zappos.com, $97.99
Lucky Brand Fedora Booties, zappos.com, $97.99

I recently tried them on at TJ Maxx and they are ridiculously comfortable – especially considering they have such a high heel with virtually no platform – as well as incredibly easy to walk in, since they're wedges. They're also currently on sale all over the internet, so you can snag them for well under $100.

Finally, let's not forget about the boys. Though I doubt the majority of the Y chromosome-carrying population calls anything they wear on their feet "booties," they nevertheless sport them constantly and great styles, like these cool military ones, keep rolling out:

So, go on ladies and gents. Work your booties. All three of them.

4 Things Every Girl Should Have in Her Closet (Besides the LBD!)

1. Blazer:

Blazers are so versatile and you can wear them in so many ways. You can wear them to work, to an interview, to go shopping, to hang out with friends and even to go out for a night on the town.

They are also great for every season of the year! In the summer just wear it with a light tank top or bandeau and a pair of shorts. In the fall, a blazer will look good with jeans, a light blouse and a pair of cute flats. During the winter months, wear your blazer with a pair of dark jeans, boots and a scarf to keep you nice and warm. In the spring, your blazer will look good with a cute sundress with a nice floral print to match the blooming flowers. There are just so many ways to wear boots; the combinations are limitless!

I think of blazers like jeans: a true necessity and there’s a fit for every body type. Taller, more lean, girls should wear a long “boyfriend” blazer because it will elongate their body and emphasize curves in all the right places. For shorter girls there is a cropped blazer. It will polish your look and create an illusion of a longer torso.

Personally, my favorite types of blazers to wear are black with a pattern on the inside so that when I roll the sleeves a little, there is a pop of color. Right now, I’m also in love with natural colored blazers; white, nude and brown. Colorful bottoms, maybe some teal or pink tapered trousers, will make a blazer more fun and refreshing!

2. Knee-high boots:

Where I’m from (Northern Orange County area), torrential rain is only a bit more than a light drizzle, so I never really got a chance to see how useful my brown, leather, knee-high boots were until I moved to the bay area.

Knee-high boots are a must because they elongate your legs and make them look slimmer. I also feel like they make “lazy” looks put more together. During my early morning classes, I usually just crawl out of bed and pull over a sweatshirt. So I don’t look a sloppy mess, I add my boots and my green button up coat and layer it over my sweatshirt. It’s comfy but it also looks like I put some effort into my appearance that morning.

Brown “riding” boots are my favorite this season. They will look good in jeans and tights, during the winter, and in dresses and skirts, during the spring.

Good boots are a quality investment because they will last a long time and can be used during the rainy season.

3. Leather jacket:

We’ve touched on a little bit of business, a little bit of country, now for a little bit of rock-and-roll! A leather jacket could give your look just the edge it needs. Just pair it with some “spiky” jewelry, some dark skinny jeans and maybe some cool black pumps, and you’ll look like you belong in a classy bike gang!

However, if you want something more practical, you can layer the jacket over a hoodie, with some jeans and boots, and it will create the perfect, casual winter look. To dress it up more, you could wear it over your favorite LBD, if you’re going out on a cold night!

My favorite part about my leather jacket is that it is water repellent! I don’t have to wear an obnoxious rain jacket when I think it’s going to rain and then it doesn’t (because San Francisco weather is very unpredictable like that). I just wear my leather jacket if I think it’s going to rain, and if it doesn’t it still looks natural!

3. Oxford Button-Up

Don’t leave the snazzy button-ups for the boys to wear on special occasions! Steal that style and make it your own. The oxford button-up is great because you can wear it to work, tucked into your pencil skirt, with a few nice accessories, and then you can just slip on a pair of jeans and roll up the sleeves and it’s instantly a casual look.

I love wearing my button-up over t-shirts or tucked into flowy skirts or with colorful pants. I honestly wear my button-up once a week because it’s so versatile.

My favorite things to wear my button-up with when I’m going out with my friends are my dark skinny jeans, black boots and black leather jacket. I just put on a few sparkly accessories to make it the perfect “night” look!

Winter is creeping up on us. Here is a list of my top 5 winter must haves that will keep you looking cute, warm and cozy when the snow hits! Remember don't force yourself to wear something that isn't comfortable to you just because a fashion icon is wearing it. Be you.

1. Having a pair of snow boots allows you to brave the storm on any occasion.

2. Long winter jackets allow you to stay extra warm. Buying a simple color like black, grey or white allows you to wear your jacket no matter what. I don't know about you but I cant afford to have a coat for every day of the week! Buy something that you can mix and match with any outfit.

3. Skinny Jeans are another winter must have. Simply because they make things so much easier! It is so hard to tuck bell bottoms into a pair of boots. Skinny jeans or jeggings make getting ready less of a hassle.

4. We cant forget about keeping your head warm. If your head isn't warm, the rest of your body won't be either! You might as well wear something cute if you must.

5. Last but not least we have the gloves. Personally, I find it hard to drive with gloves on but without them my fingers freeze! Convertible gloves are the perfect solution.

I'm Just a Summer Girl Even in December

I have been blasting "Summer Girl" by Jessica Andrews (recently covered by Leighton Meester in "Country Strong").  You may have heard it.  It goes "I'm just a summer girl.  I wear my flip flops.  When I let my hair down.  That's when the party starts.  Tanks tops and cutoff jeans. etc"  Definitely look it up.  I have been blasting this song because I am missing summer right now.  As much as I love the holiday season, the thought of low temperatures and snow make me long for those hazy days of summer.  My tan, flip flops, shorts, and no need for a jacket.  Because wearing flip flops in 20 degree weather is ridiculous, I have to find other ways to stretch my summer wardrobe into the winter.

A floral dress is a staple of any wardrobe.  One of my favorite things about summer is putting on a spaghetti strapped dress and a pair of flip flops.  As I mentioned before, flip flops would look dumb at this point of the year but I still want to wear the dress.  Darker, richer colors along with vibrant reds, purples, blues look great in any season.

Boots - With higher boots, tights or leggings are not a necessity in order to wear a dress in the winter.  You can go bare legged if you hate tights but only if the boots cover most of your calf.  If you want to wear booties or ankle boots, I would wear tights.  If the dress is patterned, you might want to wear neutral tights or black as to not overwhelm the dress.

Flats/Heels - These are also great shoe options.  Wear with tights or leggings in order to make this dress more winter wearable.  You can go bare legged but I, personally, would be a little chilly.

Shrug/Cardigan/Jacket - Wearing a strapless or thinly strapped dress in the middle of December is not a smart idea.  First off, it's cold and that's all I got.  Pair your dress with a short sleeve sweater or shrug.  They come in a multitude of colors to match whatever color your dress is.  Or opt for a cardigan.  These are so many different colors and styles that you cannot go wrong with a cardigan.  You can also throw on a great jacket in a cool color or pattern.  Jean jackets, winter coats, fitted blazers, there are so many jacket options.

Now that you are suitably attired for the weather, accessorize your dress however you like.  Cute jewelry, fun makeup, adorable purse, whatever you want.  Keep your legs and arms covered but still wear all your favorite summer dresses. As I wait for summer and flip flops, I am glad that no matter what the season I can still wear my favorite dress.

Obit: The Death of My Favorite Gray Combat Boots

Once upon a time, I had the perfect pair of lace-up gray combat boots. I got them in a shop in Amsterdam while studying abroad and wore them almost every day of my time abroad after that. I'm sure we all have our own version of the perfect boot, but for me they were perfect because:

1. They were the best shade of gray possible. Not too light, not to dark, and neutral; I could wear them with black and brown easily.

2. They had really long laces. This may sound trivial but have you ever had a pair of shoes where the laces were too short? Long is definitely better, and I could wrap them around the top of the boots with an extra bow.

3. They were flat, and extremely comfortable. I wore them so many places and made so many memories. They had been to concerts, festivals, parties, football games, classes, cities, far and wide.

4. They were the perfect height; definitely short boots but not too short. They looked great with midi skirts, shorts, short skirts, denim, and cords, and everything.

Alas, the boots are no more. They met their demise one day when I wore them to the Virgin Mobile Free Fest. The week before, it had rained TORRENTIALLY, the ENTIRE week. So the venue was crazy muddy. I had the perfect outfit for the straight-up terrible weather. It was absurdly hot but also still very very muddy so I pulled on my boots with hiking socks, cut-off jean shorts, and a tank top (plus sunglasses, of course). Halfway through the walk to the festival, I realized that the boots that I had worn and loved for years had developed huge holes in the soles right under the balls of my feet.

Now I know what you're thinking; get them resoled! I just believe that they wouldn't be quite the same, they have all these memories and fun times associated with them and I think it's time for some new boots to make memories with.

So I've rounded up some replacement options, most coming in under $150. One of them may become my new favorite pair or maybe, just maybe, you'll find something to love.

1. This pair, the Athens boot by Seychelles, is a great start. The boot has clean lines but little details like the shirring at the top, under the laces. The color is a lovely neutral gray and for added excitement the top flips over to create a cuff, changing the lines of the boot completely; perfect for dresses and denim.

2. Here's an option from Steve Madden, the Troopa Boot in stone. With all the classics of a combat boot; long laces, inside zipper, the works; there's nothing not to love about this boot. Yet I'm not convinced they're my perfect pair; I could fully commit if they were just a bit darker and less brown-hued. However I'd still consider taking them home.  They'd be perfect for pairing with this fall's brightly hued cords. Add on a patterned tank with a chambray/cardigan combo on top and finish the look with a fun square scarf. Don't forget the socks! Happy Socks have a cult following, with reason!

3. Another pick from Steve Madden, the Thistle boot in stone as well. This one gains points for being a bit darker and the quilting on the side is a lovely detail perfect for going from day to night.

4. Everyone knows Frye Boots have a reputation for lasting comfort (like decades "lasting"). So while these boots cost a pretty penny, they're likely worth those pennies, especially since I'm a known boot killer.

5. I'm sorry, but these are just cool. They aren't what I was looking for but they are almost too fun to pass up.

6. These are awesome! Criss cross straps are definitely a perk and so is their sale price.

7. This may be them! The perfect color, and at under a hundred bucks they're priced to make me happy. Plus I love the rugged touches; mud would be no problem.

So, maybe you and I have found our next perfect pair of boots. Hopefully we can all crunch through fall leaves and first frost in style!
