A Black and Gold Holiday Party

A couple of Novembers ago I went to the opening of the new medieval galleries at the Victoria and Albert museum in London. It was an all out medieval masked gathering—people showed up as knights and princesses looking like they just walked off a movie set. As a history major, I was pretty excited, but this occasion also afforded me the excuse to head to the Topshop flagship store on Oxford Street in search of the perfect dress. Although I love the dress I settled on, the one I really wanted was the ultimate medieval-esque minidress. To this day I kick myself for not splurging on it: it was black velvet, strapless with a sweetheart top, and embroidered with sequined birds and flowers like those on a tapestry.

So this season of holiday parties, I recommend looking to the masquerade ball for inspiration. Think dark velvets with gold detailing, mirrored ballrooms and the swish of silk...

Back in black – we hit the sack.
It’s been too long we’re glad its back.

Black is back! I’m sorry guys, but I can’t help but plagiarize from AC/DC’s song “Back in Black” in order to emphasize that black truly is back. This season is all about the beautiful dark hue infused with classic Western cuts and fabric arrangements – also known as classy.

Some people like the brights (which has been pretty big this fall), but others like myself can’t rid themselves of their devotion to the simple yet very mystifying black. And I mean, c’mon guys, black is cool. (Proof: It’s Alexander Wang’s favorite color!)

The classic wool coat, the dark leggings, the long black skirt, the black on black, the mens-inspired trouser, the cozy (yet fashionable) sweater, the chunky dark shoes --these are some of my favorite Fall RTW trends this season.

Motorcycle boots are increasing in popularity. The chunky and heavy feel of a flat boot, are replacing many ballet flats out on the sidewalks, and with winter finally here who could blame your toes for wanting more protection from the cold!
