Happy New Year, fashionistas!

New York, New York: Fashion's Night Out

If you are lucky enough to be a New Yorker, you as a fashionista were out Thursday night scanning Fifth Avenue for celebrities and strutting down Broadway snagging incredible deals. Even if you hail from another, though likely smaller, fashion mecca, you still could have been in on the action, as Fashion's Night Out takes place in over 250 cities, from "Manhattan to Milan," as the official website boasts. FNO made waves in its third year here in NYC, glimmering with the glitz of the famous and the glamour of the designer. With its own following, FNO even supplies t-shirts to fashion fans to flaunt as they crane to catch a glimpse of Kanye West and score a free mascara at Benefit, uptown. Bergdorf Goodman had whimsical live models in its larger-than-life street windows, and everyone believed SJP would turn the corner at any moment. Of course, in my neck of the woods, NYU, half your new friends have pics with Penn Badgley. Along with throngs of other NYU students that came to NY with fashion being a true factor, Dakota Fanning headed to SoHo to endorse Marc Jacob's new fragrance, Oh, Lola! and her new role as a muse. The chic urban designer deserves credit as one of the initiators of FNO, along with Vogue's Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour. Even a toddler yet, FNO is changing the face of fashion from a deeply individualized realm into a truly social experience.

Wide Open Spaces

My closet right now is a big, gaping hole. Trying not to be a procrastinator as I usually am has forced me to pack up all my clothes with about five days to spare before I leave for college. So until then, the sad sight of underused hanging space and hollow drawers will be staring me down. But when you are going to a college across the country from home, like I am, will you still want all your "comfort clothes" that you and all your friends have practically worn out? California's central coast, where I'm from, is all about Vans and laid-back jeans and tanks and tees. Granted, as a fashionista, I expand my style, but I definitely have days where blending in sounds like a good idea.

New college fashionistas, should we ditch the old threads and wait to shop in our new home and soak in that style, or bring a piece of our home with us? I think there is a balance. I don't need to lug every gym shirt I've ever owned to college. But that one with the local burger shack logo might offer some comfort on a rainy, lonely day in the first few weeks. And all the clothes that express your style from high school: don't throw away what you like in order to fit your new setting. You should still be yourself. Bring your style to the college mix, and as you evolve in your new environment, your wardrobe will too. You can always leave a few old, tatty memories in your empty closet to come home to.

Hat Chitchat

Just because it’s designer, does that make it fabulous? Top fashion names are famous because their clothes have proven themselves to be classic or forward, bold or chic, but always, always right-on-key. Designer clothes should enhance the moment they were made for, whether it be the first snowfall of winter or a dip in the pool.

I recently found myself in just such a special moment. I was relaxing by the pool with an old friend in the middle of July. My friend is of Dutch descendent and as pale as they come. “It’s understandable she needs a lot of protection from the sun with that ivory skin, but that hat?” I thought. Should I let a dear friend in on her fashion faux pas? The sun was fierce, our legs were sticky against the patio chairs, and it was a sticky situation. It’s one thing to discourage foul headwear, but it’s another to discourage Gucci foul headwear. Can one draw the line against the odd slip-up of the famous names in fashion? Are the top designer brands simply untouchable?

Gucci logo

The only thing that said Gucci about that navy almost-a-cloche-but-with-a-perky-brim bonnet were the tiny words on the baby buckle on the side. I decided that no one should ever let a friend drown in label loyalty, so I expressed my honest surprise that Gucci would make such a thing and suggested she wait a couple seasons until it came in style, (hoping it never would). That label must have been a misnomer. But was it? Many of us fashionistas are faithful to our favorite designers, but do we lose our objectivity when we commit? Is this unconditional love or blind acceptance?
