Straight Off the Streets

It just ended…. that time of year again when fashionistas (and fashionistos) from around the world flock to the big white tents, sit wide-eyed, and dumbstruck at the cascading colors and fabrics strutting down the runway. It was New York’s 2012 Fashion Week.

Dianne Von Furstenberg? Yes, please. Carolina Herrera? Amen. Vera Wang? I die. But what about the runway outside the tents? Yes, I am talking about the streets of New York City, where some of the most alluring fashion is found.

This year, Tommy Ton photographed the street style scene of New York’s finest. And I am here to show you some of my favorite street style looks, as well as give you a few tips on how to incorporate street trends into your every day style!

The coral button up and navy blazer is the perfect, yet unexpected pairing. Layering contrasting colors can make your look pop, and if you have the confidence, you can definitely pull this look off. If you are not yet comfortable with trying crazy color combinations like neon yellow and baby pink (which actually, would be a fab combo!), stick to one pop of color, layered under a more neutral color. For instance, a bright teal button-up layered under a thin beige sweater. Buttoning the button-up all the way, for that extra preppy feel will definitely pull the whole outfit together! And don’t forget to accessorize -- even a simple gold chain or pendant can add that extra touch of glam.

Accessories in bright colors and unique shapes can really put your look over the edge of absolute fabulousity. Be bold and confident when choosing accessories! These sunglasses for instance, in a bright color with hexagonal shaped lenses, show a sense of confidence and quirky-ness. However, accessories should not be an overkill—either use accessories as the focal point of your outfit, or to enhance your outfit. Accessories in the same color family as the rest of your outfit, as portrayed here, can help to give your outfit a focused theme, so you don’t look like a five-year-old playing dress up.

Okay, so you’ll probably know by now that I absolutely love color. This outfit is for those of you who love the “laid back” feel. A casual tee, an edgy leather jacket, a simple clutch -- and all in the same color family. The focus is the trousers, though! Perfect for that pop of color. Anyone could pull this look off by investing in some jeans in a vibrant color. Cobalt blue or salmon are my personal favorites. And a black contrast with it helps you exude that “cool” vibe.

Besides mix and matching colors, try playing with different fabrics. An oversized chunky knit scarf paired with a silk scarf not only will add dimension to your outfit, but will also keep you extra warm! The best part is that once you’re inside, and it’s warm, you can take off your knit scarf but still have your silk scarf as an accessory, to keep your outfit together. You can try playing with different patterns as well, but remember to then keep the rest of your outfit pretty neutral, or in the same color family. This is a creative look that will surely make heads turn. It’ll grab anyone’s attention, and you can show off your love for texture, color and pattern, with different pairings of scarves.
