A trend I noticed recently on the S/S 2012 runways was something most of us would run screaming from: the fashion sin known as print-mixing. However, when done with a careful eye for color and line, it can come off as really quite chic. These are some of my favorite runway looks:

I find that this look is most successful when different pieces are in the same color family, with slight differences in texture or the central color. Take, for example, this look off of Iceberg’s runway:

Pairing a black flower-print top with a pair of flowery white shorts comes off as playful yet put together, perfect for a breezy day... I LOVE mixing flower prints in my outfits, as it adds a bit of a quirky edge to an otherwise straightforwardly feminine look. However, you can easily achieve this style with winter garb as well–Layering patterned knit sweaters, skirts and socks lets you hit the streets looking coordinated and perfectly cozy... yet not terribly matchy-matchy.

Finally, one of the easiest ways to pull off bold prints is to infuse a strong accessory or two into an already standout outfit.

Graphic woven belts, handbags, or collars–which are especially popular this season–create contrast but visually flow with a similarly colored top or dress. I’m really looking forward to mixing and experimenting with the lush textures and prints that already make up my closet–So be daring and pop this spring (or winter)!
