Preview to Milan Fashion Week

It is a crucial time in the world of fashion for the pre-fall 2012 collections. Milan Fashion Week Menswear 2012 just ended and on February 9, 2012 New York Fashion Week begins. Although Milan Fashion Week predominantly features menswear, there were some women’s shows that gave note of what to look for in the fall season. Alberta Ferretti, Alexander McQueen, Antonio Marras, Bally, Emilio Pucci, No.21, Versace and Viktor & Rolf were the top women’s shows during Milan’s Fashion Week.

My personal favorites were Viktor & Rolf, and Alexander McQueen. Viktor & Rolf’s collection maintained their standard of feminine qualities as they toyed with a woman’s silhouettes; hence, their emphasis on strong shoulders and tight waistlines. The collection emphasizes a blend of Victorian ladies luxurious elegance with pantsuits and structured blazers, in a variety of textures, such as velvet, silk and satin. Pants were not skinny and fitted, as we have been seeing; they were instead high-waist, loose and flowing. The mysteriousness of a woman inspired the collection and was reflected by the use of dark hues of purple, green, and black.

Alexander McQueen’s Collection for Fall 2012 also features elements of Victorian inspiration and an array of dark tones. McQueen’s designs are noteworthy for the dramatic elements and theatrical presentation, as each piece tells a story and emits a character. This collection was no exception, but also had an element of newness that was more practical for use, such as the cocktail dresses and pant suits. Dark red, green, blue and black were the dominant colors in his collection and also in variety of textures: velvet, silk, satin, and lace. The Alexander McQueen’s designs featured followed a structure that highlights a tight waist through either a belt or a broadening of shoulders and hips. Tops of the collection had defined shoulders, but still upheld a feminine hourglass shape. Capes were, also, repeatedly seen in the collection.

Fall 2012 is going to be categorized for a dark and mysterious layering of multiple textures. Classic shape and structure of the female body will be essential when deciding on an outfit. Touches of bows, lace and elaborate embroidery work are highlighted features. Feathers and fur are still apparent in the collections but not as predominantly as they were for Fall 2011. Pointed toes and defined shoulders in blazers and blouses are going to be big trends. Fall 2012 is very detail oriented, so make sure to pay attention to embroidery, texts, and cuts when picking out pieces.

Comments:

The designs are all lovely, but I can't help but be depressed by all the dull colors.
