First Lady Style Firsts

I've blogged about my love for accessories -- especially belts -- before, but with the look getting so much love and attention in high places, I had to throw in my own vote of approval!

Michelle Obama's style choices were some of the biggest talking points in the hoopla surrounding the Inauguration. While admittedly one would hope that the attention would be focused elsewhere on a day of such national political significance, at the end of the day, as First Lady, Michelle Obama is a de facto style icon. This is a perfect example of taking a fashion staple -- a statement-making, waist-cinching belt -- and putting an individual twist on it. It has been widely reported (and exclaimed over and marveled at) that this J. Crew belt was originally designed to be a sash, and that the First Lady converted it to a belt on her own initiative. Michelle's innovation is a great way of interpreting one of the most flattering and trendy silhouettes.
