Exercise Trends

So I’m on my way to the gym and not really looking forward to exercising. I feel obligated, really, because of the guilt. I’m thinking, “You know…I probably shouldn’t have eaten that extra bowl of cereal…”

I walk through the doors of my school’s recreational center and immediately feel like Homer Simpson...

What’s a gym?

This clip always makes me laugh because I understand that confusion. Every time I walk into a gym, I never know what to do, where to start, the amount of sweating I should allow people to see (pit stains = too gross?), etc. People have their routines, and you know what? So do I.

As much as I dread going to the gym, it’s funny because after a good work-out, I feel fantastic. It puts me in a better mood, and my ridiculous insecurities seem to subside. Well, at least until the next time I feel the need to work-out...

Things remain consistent at my gym: The guys are always at the weights, pumping iron, flexing their muscles and grunting obnoxiously, the line of treadmills are always occupied by males and females alike, and the more modest types are at the far end of the gym working on their abs or doing extensive stretches.

The other consistency lies in clothing choices and this is what I have observed recently:

Females are trending towards form fitting compression pants/capris and racer back tank tops.

I always envy the girls that can pull off those pants, and I have yet to find the confidence to wear them when I exercise. But then I thought, why not try them out? I’m sick of the same heavy cotton shorts that seem to make me sweat more than I have to, and apparently these types of pants can help relieve my sweat fears.

Adidas has a great selection of compression pants, like these:

The compression fabric helps reduce muscle vibration and maximizes endurance and is also made of a CLIMALITE® fabric that absorbs sweat directly off your skin as it develops.

Cost: $40

A cheaper option: Old Navy.

With the same features and characteristics as Adidas’s compression pants, you can buy these at Old Navy for less than half the cost! AND Right now they are having a 25% off discount in stores worldwide as well as on their website.

Cost: $15

Racer back tank tops are always in at the gym and lately I’ve noticed that fewer girls are making the decision of wearing a ratty old t-shirt. Okay, it’s comfortable, but I realize that it can also drag you down. Often I have chosen an old t-shirt in hopes of hiding my hips, but it really just made me uncomfortable and frumpy. A nice racer back is breathable and surprisingly flattering.

This tank top by Champion comes in an array of colors, featuring that same type of fabric that wicks away moisture, is stretchable, and sleek. It’s cheap too!

Cost: $20

Champion also has a line of racer back tank tops with built-in bras. Can you say, bonus!

Having the right exercise wardrobe can really amp up your work-out routine because it can boost confidence and confidence is what you need to begin living a healthier life.

Maybe the next time you enter a gym, you won’t feel so disoriented like Homer. Isn’t it better to look like you know what you’re doing? I bet you’ll inspire others, like what those girls did for me with those tight pants.

MAKRI has recently designed cufflinks, rings, bracelets, and necklaces for the Row, all featuring pink and white gold, colored diamonds, and sapphires. All pieces are hand-made when ordered.

Illeana Makri is a Greek designer who is based in Greece.  Her flagship store, Mageia (Greek for enchantment or music), opened in 1987.  Nature, culture, Greek mythology, and the “evil eye” are some of her largest inspirations – the “evil eye” in Mediterranean cultures symbolizing protection against evil forces.  Makri’s collections are available at Barney’s New York, among various other locations.

Both MAKRI’s collaboration with the Row and the Row’s Resort 2012 collection were inspired by the European gilded age.  MAKRI’s designs were featured in the Resort collection, accompanying embroidered floral tops and dresses and Prince of Wales separates.

The collection can be viewed at the Row’s official website.

Favorite Boots

Boots

Ever since I moved to San Francisco I have seen a major trend of girls wearing knee-high boots. I own a pair of suede black boots with ribbon ties on the side and I love adding them to a casual outfit of jeans and a t-shirt all the time. Boots can instantly transform any outfit into a stylish and sexy fit. There is something powerful about wearing high boots because they are so urban chic. You can almost find any style from different textures, colors, and even weather-proof -- rain boots are extremely popular and come in the most adorable designs.

In addition, at times when I want to dress up and don’t feel like wearing heels or flats, I immediately head for my boots. They are super comfortable and you don’t have to worry about walking in heels all night -- you'll have so much more freedom! Especially in the cold weather of San Francisco boots are the ideal accessory. I love flat and heeled boots since both are very cute additions for a wide variety of looks. I prefer more neutral colors so I can pair them with most of my outfits. My favorites are caramel and dark brown colored boots because I like the way they blend in with many outfits.

Moreover, heeled boots give one the option to wear heeled shoes in a comfortable way. They are super cute because I think they give every woman a confident look. Pairing them with nice jeans, a long pencil skirt, or even a dress can transform an outfit that can be worn out to dinner or even in a professional setting. In whatever way you may decide to wear your rain boots or leather boots (synthetic, of course), be sure to feel comfy and at ease. Shoes are a practical commodity and choosing one that fits your own style will make you feel amazing.

Fresh Friday: Fishing for Compliments

Things get zany at Fresh Friday. But with all the gluey, glittery Halloween prep this week, I’ve been craving freshness in the simple sense. A hug in fabric form: the fisherman’s sweater originates in the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland, where women knit them for their husbands at sea. Not to be confused with cable knit sweaters, fisherman’s sweaters are traditionally cream colored and contain a variety of patterns in addition to the cable. Many of these stitch patterns have symbolic origins: the honeycomb symbolizes the hard-working bee, cables represent a fisherman’s rope, diamonds indicate wealth, and the basket stitch stands for the fisherman’s hope for copious catches.

My fisherman's sweater is a staple through fall, winter, and spring. It can be styled to look both cozy and refined, day or night.  This season, I like the idea of freshening up the classic garment with bold-colored skinny pants and maxi skirts. See my roundup of some variations available online. I especially recommend Etsy for vintage options!

Last Minute Halloween Costume Ideas

I am a firm believer that the age to stop dressing up for Halloween is approximately...never. Seriously, last year my Grandma was Dorothy. Perhaps it was just the way I was raised, but I was never one of those girls who saw Halloween as a green light to dress as a prostitute in bunny ears. In reality, Halloween costumes are what you make them to be. However, for the fashion enthused, dressing up can be a time to feature your creativity and sense of individuality! All the live long day I hear colleagues ask what they should be for Halloween. Yes, sometimes even the most intelligent and witty of people need a boost in the right direction when it comes to thinking of a costume. It turns out that I am one of those people who constantly thinks of Halloween costume ideas, no matter the season. Keeping in mind that sometimes the most rewarding costumes are the ones you make yourself, let’s take a look at my Costume Archive (and let’s just say after reading this you have no excuse to be sans costume this year)!
