Which Winter Coat is Right For You?

If you are shopping for a coat for the winter season, then you definitely want to make sure that it flatters your beautiful figure. However, we all know that no two ladies are alike, so make certain that you find the right coat for your body type!

If you are a pear shape with wider hips, it is best to choose a longer coat that meets your mid thigh area. A sophisticated way to wear this type of coat is in a double breasted pea coat, which gives the opportunity to flatter your curves and still slim you down at the same time.

If you are hoping for an all over slimming effect, then again choose a longer coat that goes past your backside in one solid color. It is also best to find a coat that has a belt or cinches around your waist to show that there really is a beautiful woman in there. This is best for curvier ladies with a bust and backside that they want to highlight.

If you have a more petite figure, then you have the opportunity to use different prints and adornments on your winter coat. It's still a great idea to have a trim waist on your coat to show your figure, and you can also use pockets on your coat to draw attention and add volume.

Nicole Richie Over Accessorizes

by Personal Stylist Vanessa Valiente of V-Style

Nicole Richie

Last month, Nicole Richie debuted darker locks at the launch of her House of Harlow 1960 Holiday Collection, but what stole my attention were her accessories. To be more specific, her over accessorizing. Minimal accessories have been a major look for 2009, but for 2010 I say lets get a little crazy. Let’s take a page from Nicole Richie’s book of style and balance a simple sheath dress with wild adornments.

Sporting her own collection, Nicole Richie piled seven bracelets on her arm, two bracelets on the wrist of the same arm and topped it off with a huge ring on her middle finger. For the other wrist, four thick bangles and then no necklace or earrings to ensure the whole look doesn’t look too much like the gaudy old women wearing everything she owns.

First of all, I have always been a fan of pushing bangles up to the bicep. Topping to off with bangles at the wrist as well is just genius. (I know women with thicker arms are thinking, yeah-right for the bangle on the bicep so I’ll move on.) Other ways to over accessorize in a modern and stylish way is piling on the rings. Don’t stop at the one cocktail ring, throw on three more between your two hands and see how you feel. Top off the load of rings with large earrings and a plain thing chain at the neck for a cool image. (Skip the bracelets if you choose a ton of rings). When over accessorizing make sure you only accessorize two or three parts of the body and skip the other parts. For example choose to adorn fingers and ears or neck and fingers or fingers and wrists.

Obviously the key to making this work is to pile the jewels onto very simple clothing. You know, T-shirt and jeans, solid colored dresses, plain tunics, simple leggings or pants and so on. Think simple, minimal layers or details and no patterns unless it’s on your shoes. You must be a canvas for your fabulous jewelry, but having some pattern or texture on your shoes will balance your look.

Are You Ready For Adorable Plaids?

It seems that plaid often goes hand-in-hand with a lumberjack or a member of Nirvana from the 90s, but nowadays it is a chic new item to add to your wardrobe. Many celebrities have been spotted wearing plaid shirts with their sophisticated wardrobes, so why not give it a shot in yours?

A plaid shirt is perfect for bumming around and going shopping with your friends, or even hanging out at the park for a weekend date. You can get a fitted version for a little bit of Western appeal to your wardrobe, and make sure to roll up the sleeves so that it looks more flattering and less like something that your father would wear!

If you aren't yet ready to add a complete plaid shirt to your wardrobe, then why not try it in a cozy scarf for the wintertime? There are a number of beautiful plaid scarves out there, and they pair perfectly with any of your winter wear, like a sweater, pea coat, or even a T-shirt for the warmer weather.

Plaid also extends to a number of different accessories, like plaid shoes or even a simple plaid jacket. However, take caution in wearing plaid pants because you definitely don't want to look like Screech from Saved by the Bell or any other memorable nerd from years ago.

Keep an eye out for plaid items for your wardrobe that pair perfectly with winter boots, scarves, and other winter accessories. This is a fun way to spice up your wardrobe, and there are also many different sophisticated plaid items that will perfectly suit your office wear. In fact, there are quite a few very subtle black and gray plaid prints that will look posh and stylish for any evening out on the town. Why not?

Lovin' Me Some Hanky Panky

I'm a sucker for cute packaging. There, I said it. I love cute packaging like a fat kid loves cake. It's the marketer in me to love innovative packaging and squeal every time something new comes out. And squeal I did when I saw Hanky Panky's "Candy" Original Rise Thong. It comes wrapped like a piece of candy! How awesome is that? (Ok, maybe I'm getting a little too excited about a thong, but ahhhhhh~) I bought a pair and love, love them! They're so comfortable and soft.

Each thong retails for $18.00.

Bye-Bye, Boyfriend Blazers!

Yes, boyfriend blazers did look chic the first time they hit the runway; they were so tastefully distinctive when paired with frilly, flowery mini dresses. I remember making a mental note about going through my boyfriend’s wardrobe after I spotted the boyfriend blazer on Louis Vuitton’s runway. I just knew it was a trend that will stay for quite a while.

And stay it did. In fact, Hollywood has been quite loyal to boyfriend blazers, arguably because they are a great way to add panache to a so-so outfit. Sadly, its novelty has withered away, at least to me. A boyfriend blazer suddenly seemed tacky and oversized, a fad that was better off as a one-hit wonder.

"Blazers lessen the sleaze factor of

super skimpy shorts and add a smidgen of

sophistication to any getup that

flashes too much skin – that is,

if the blazers actually fit."

Not that I have anything against blazers in general. They do make an outfit more put-together. Blazers lessen the sleaze factor of super skimpy shorts and add a smidgen of sophistication to any getup that flashes too much skin - that is, if the blazers actually fit. But boyfriend blazers? There's a reason they belong to our boyfriends: they were never meant to fit us.

Even the greatest and most iconic of trends come and go. It’s fashion’s nature to undergo a cycle of change, bringing in new fabrics, patterns, cuts, and styles while shelving the old ones in a bin, ready for an unscheduled comeback in the future.

The boyfriend blazer has had its fair share of devout celeb followers, including Mary Kate Olsen, Charlize Theron, and, of course, the one who started it all: Kate Moss. But after looking at myself in the mirror wearing extra large blazers for the nth time, I had a much-needed epiphany: boyfriend blazers eventually make you look dated.I knew they were a borrowed trend from the eighties, given a new spin to look more fresh and up-to-date. However, that simply wasn’t enough. The evidence was staring right back at me in the mirror, uncovering the fact that I would rather wear something that fits me perfectly.

Style is a matter of taste; it all lies in the eyes of the beholder. I’ve met with the boyfriend blazer, shaken its hand, and been great friends with it. It has taken a special spot in my closet, right beside my flab-concealing LBD and my dependable skinny jeans. But after months of counting on my beloved boyfriend blazer, it’s time to say farewell.

Boyfriend blazers are a great trend. In fact, I bet they shall continue to grace the catwalk this 2010. Maybe I'll throw it on once in a while if I miss adding tomboy flair to my outfit. For me, however, style also means breaking old trends and making new ones. My boyfriend blazer has an official shelf life and, as the New Year begins, I am ready to move on.

The Circus Visits Louboutin

Hmm, did Zeebo the Clown take over the designing studio over at Christian Louboutin?! I can't say that I'm too thrilled about this slingback. The colors make it look like it was designed for a clown and yeah, I'm just not feeling it. This Bianca Slingback Platform Pump comes in black and nude and retails for $755.00.

2009: A Fashion Reminiscence

Have you noticed how most of last year’s biggest trends were actually rehashes of styles from previous decades? Although fashion does have a tendency of inadvertently reusing and recycling style trends, 2009 is a year that arguably has the most number of style comebacks.

Maxi dresses were a big hit in 2009, giving the world a flashback of hippie fashion. Heel-length, flowy, print maxi dresses are another reason for you to celebrate being feminine; after all, a maxi dress gives you the perfect excuse to wear a flower in your hair. If you want to cop this look before it takes a permanent backseat, try fashion-forward Kate Moss’ maxi dress from her self-named line at TopShop.

Shoulder pads made a big comeback last year, thanks to Pierre Balmain’s Spring 2009 jackets. Shoulder pads are not for the faint of heart as it is sure to get you noticed from a mile away. To avoid looking like a bad version of an even worse eighties disaster, steer clear of baggy, padded shirts. Instead, stick to basic items that have a sleek, timeless silhouette.

When it comes to color, neons were arguably the favorite of designers from around the globe. Not for the first time, neon brights became the “it” hue for shirts, leggings, shoes, bags, and even makeup. But if you’re too color-conscious and would rather remain on the less saturated end of the color palette, try carrying a Louis Vuitton bag from the Stephen Sprouse collection. The neon graffiti print jumps out from the classic LV design without causing an eye sore.

Drawing inspiration from previous decades, designers made high waist trousers look fresh once again by playing with fabrics and colors. Your first impulse would probably be to steer clear of those high waist pants for fear of revealing unwanted “ab flab”. Actually, high-waist jeans are a stylish way to tuck in your tummy; they act like a binder while giving your wardrobe a trend update at the same time. Oscar de la Renta’s high-waisted pants are loose and flowy, perfect for faking an hourglass figure.

When jumpsuits reappeared on the runway last year, many fashionistas jumped on the bandwagon without hesitation. Jumpsuits will remain with us for a little while; in fact, 2010 promises to be full of jumpsuits and rompers, highlighting the utilitarian side of the fashion world. If you don’t want to look dated wearing a one-piece suit, try BCBG Max Azria’s draped jumpsuit from last year’s Spring collection.
