Spice Up Your White T-Shirt

I’m sure everyone has a plain white tee in their wardrobe, so I thought a few tips on what to wear with it would be helpful and inspirational. I'm sure the possibilities of white t-shirt pairings is endless. Just remember, fashion isn’t about following rules or copying what you see in photos and on models exactly. It’s all about what you want it to be and what inspires you!

A plain white t-shirt will provide a simple background for your necklace to be the center of attention in your outfit. Since white is neutral and bright, it will add lightness to any outfit and can match with anything. Statement necklaces are an easy way to spice up a plain, white t-shirt.

2. Scarves

There’s nothing I love more than a perfect fitting blazer! Okay, maybe I love a lot of things, but a classic blazer is a must in every wardrobe. It can be worn casually and professionally, if you find the right one. A blazer over a white t-shirt is such a classic, effortless look. I grew up in the 90’s, and I remember that this look was stylish then. I’ve seen photos from the 80’s and it was stylish then as well (more of a ‘Miami Vice’ type of look, but that’s how fashion was back then!). Either way, I don’t see this look going out of style any time soon.

4. Skirts

I just LOVE wearing skirts in the spring and summer seasons. In the winter, I try to pair them with some warm tights or leggings. Skirts that are a bit more on the dressy side make white t-shirts look less casual and more put together. I love the white t-shirt + skirt look for date night. This look is comfortable and feminine at the same time, two things I love in every outfit.

Feel free to share your ideas on how to wear a plain white t-shirt as well! I would love to read all of your wonderful ideas.

Things to Do: Save Last Summer's Shorts

This might be one of the cutest and easiest ways to spruce up a pair of cutoffs. I love wearing denim shorts in the summer, but the cutoffs I make can often be tight and unflattering on my legs. I found this picture on Pinterest, one of my favorite websites of all time.

This look is absolutely adorable, and very easy to achieve! All you need are a pair of denim shorts, two pieces of lace or two doilies, scissors, and a needle and some light-colored thread.

First, use the scissors to carefully rip the outer seams of your shorts about three inches or your desired length. Turn shorts inside out, and arrange and trim the lace until you get your desired look. Finally, use a simple back stitch to secure the lace to the shorts, and voilà! You have some adorable new shorts for spring and summer.

Blazer Surgery

It was so cold out today, and all I could think about as I was getting dressed was how frigid all of the unevenly heated classrooms would be. Tights? No way! Short-sleeved shirt? Dream on. Today was a blazer day. So, I threw on something reminiscent of this ensemble:

Forever 21 casual linen jacket

As I sat through my first two classes, I felt boxy. The shoulder pads overwhelmed me, and I just couldn't take it anymore. So, I took my scalpel (seam ripper) and decided to do some blazer surgery in between my 10:30 and 12:30 lectures. Here's how I took the weight of my shoulders:

Step 1: Locate the shoulder pad

Each blazer is different, so be sure to feel it out. Are the shoulder pads visible from the inside of the jacket, or are they hidden in the liner? Once you locate them be sure that they are able to be detached before you rip the seams.

Step 2: The liner

Most blazers now have a liner that conceals the shoulder pads. You need to open up the liner to expose the shoulder pads. However, don’t get too crazy with the seam ripper, the less that you have to resew, the better. Go slowly and be conservative. Only open up the necessary cavity to extract the shoulder pad and have access to the stitches that hold it in place.

Step 3: Taking out the shoulder pads

At this point you need to be especially careful because if you rip the wrong seam you could take off the sleeve. Be sure that what you are ripping only holds the shoulder pad to the jacket. I found with my Forever 21 blazer that there were large and obvious stitches holding the shoulder pads in place, so it was easy to remove.

Step 4: Re-stitch the hole

This part is also crucial. You can do this by hand or, if you feel so inclined, you can use a sewing machine. Be sure that you are using a strong stitch because shoulders on a blazer undergo a lot of stress and pulling. Start sewing back on some of the old existing stitches to ensure that yours won’t come out. You may want to go over them twice.

Taking the shoulder pads out of your blazers can bring new life to those outdated super-business jackets or to a really unique blazer from a thrift store (or from here on Smashion). It gives your blazer a more feminine shape and takes the weight off your shoulders, literally.

Pamper Your Nails (Why They Need Some TLC)

I'll admit it.  I am one of those girls.  You know the ones who always have their nails polished?  Yeah that's me.  When did this happen?  For years, I felt nail polish was too much work but now I can count the people on one hand that have seen my nails unpolished for more than 12 hours.  I'll admit it.  I love having them polished and now feel strange when they are not polished.  I see nail polish as a form of expression allowing me to express my mood and my color preference without saying a word.  I favor dark polishes in the winter, pastels in the spring, and metallics depending on the occasion. All of this nail polish does have a detrimental effect on my nails themselves.  While I do not have the time to pamper my nails every time I paint them, I try to do this intense nail care routine once a month.  I am a college student who doesn't have the time or money to get them done at the salon so here are my at-home manicure tips.

1. Remove all the old polish first!!  Do not paint layer upon layer of nail polish.  That isn't good for your nail and it could turn them yellow.  For all price ranges and preferences, go to the drug store and pick up some nail polish remover.  It comes in pads or you can use cotton balls/Q-tips along with the bottle of nail polish.

2. Trim your nails straight across.  Trying to cut them at funny angles could cause you to get an ingrown nail.

3. Use a nail file to shape your nails however you like, short, long, square, round.  Start at the edge of the nail and work towards the top always filing in one direction.

4. Soak your nails in warm water to soften the cuticles.  Then follow up with cuticle oil and massage into cuticles.

5. Use an orangestick to push down your cuticles but be careful.  You don't want to cut them or cause an infection.

6. Moisturize your hands with your favorite lotion.  Don't let your hands get dehydrated and dry.

Now your nails have been fully pampered and are ready to be polished.  Dry your hands first so they are not wet or oily.

7. Paint a coat of base coat to protect the nail from the the harshness of the color.

8. Paint two coats of color.  Use three strokes, one on each side of the nail and one in the middle.

9. Finish up with a coat of top coat so your nail polish will last longer.

Board the Bird with Class and Ease: What to Wear to the Airport

My family owns a travel agency so you could say that I’ve been on an airplane more times than I can count on my two hands. Therefore, I know a little something about airport etiquette. I would like to bequeath this knowledge to my readers after this last holiday season, while going through airport security before boarding my flight to LAX, I’ve come to find that there seems to be a great deal of people who don’t know how to dress at an airport.

There was this woman in front of me, holding up the line as she took her sweet time taking off her excessive amount of jewelry, tugging off her knee-high boots, unbuttoning her coat and unraveling her scarf. And there I was, blazer over my arm, my TOMS cradled in the other, holding my laptop out of its bag all before I even reached the baskets to put them in!

I understand that life is a runway, but come on people! It’s like she didn’t even know she was about to board a plane until that moment!

So you don’t be THAT jerk that holds up the line, here are some tips on what to wear to the airport:

What to wear when you travel
1. H&M Sweatpants, hm.com, $20; 2. Fleece Zip Up Hoodie, forever21.com, $14; 3. Madewell Minnetonka Kitty Suede Moccasins, madewell.com, $40; 4. HUE Hidden Cotton Liner, lorisshoes.com, $6.50; 5. Washed Out Skinny Jeans, forever21.com, $25; 6. BKE Mini Backpack, buckle.com, $36; 7. Grey Hummingbird Sweat Top, dorothyperkins.com, $39; 8. Large Snow Leopard Bangle Watch, betseyjohnson.com, $125; 9. TOMS Glitter Black Slip-On Classic Women, toms.com, $54

1. Be comfy

Airlines are overbooking themselves these days due to the economy. This means that the plane will more than likely be crowded and you have a great chance of getting the middle seat. You do not want to wear a tight pencil skirt and heels when you are sitting in the middle seat. Trust me!

Instead wear some nice worn in jeans or jeggings. Something you can cross your legs in! However, if you are about to board a plane for more than 6 hours, I would opt for a pair of cute sweats or yoga pants. Something you feel comfortable walking through an airport in as well as sleeping in.

Also, if you’re going to wear a hoodie, wear a zip-up or a loungy shirt that can stand alone as a sweater. If you wear a sweatshirt, you might as well just wear a coat with a million buttons. It’s a real hassle going through security with one: you have to pull it over your head and you’ll mess up your hair and make-up. The cabin could get a little stuffy as well, and you might want to take off your sweater without elbowing the person’s head next you.

I admire people with good intentions who wear sandals to the airport. However, when you think about how many other people wore sandals to the airport and the amount of germs that are on that floor, it doesn’t seem like such a good idea anymore. Instead, go for a pair of slip-on shoes that you can wear shoe-liners with. You’ll still be able to speed through security without getting your feet dirty!

2. Keep it simple

Leave your dangling earrings, thousands of bangles, and bulky necklaces in your checked luggage. You will have to take them off before going through the metal detector and you will hold up the line and people will glare at you.

My suggestion is to wear a cute watch such as the one pictured above. It’s not a regular watch, it doubles as a snap on bracelet so you can snap it off easily before going through security! It’s cute and useful. Betsey Johnson has a really good selection of them and you can usually get them extremely discounted at places such as Nordstrom Rack.

I also suggest that you use a backpack and a duffle bag as your carry-ons so that you can pack more. You can use your cute backpack to store make-up wipes, hand sanitizer, chapstick (in a quart sized bag of course), a book, iPod, Kindle, portable DVD player, magazines, etc. rather than stuffing all that in a purse.

You know those romance movies, where the couple meets at the airport or on the plane and then they fall madly in love and live happily ever after? Well that won’t happen if you’re late for your flight because you’re still sliding the thousands of bangles off your arm and untying your shoe laces at security.

Believe me, this guide will make you seem less of a jerk which in result may even lead you to make new friends!

Happy travels!
